Humankind has a never-ending voracious appetite. Imagine the situation in which there are no cattle ranches or chicken farms, and had there only been wild-caught chicken, cattle, pigs, etc.... those animals would have become extinct from the face of the earth. Even if a few survived, most people would not have been able to afford them. This is more or less what is happening to many fish species today.
We are at a point in history where the seafood market is turning from a supply driven market to a demand driven market. There just simply is not enough fish. Fish farming has grown rapidly around the world and expected to surpass wild fisheries as our major source of edible seafood sometime in the next few years. However we simply do not see traditional forms of aquaculture, or any other form of agriculture for that matter, as being adequate to sustainably meet future demand. There just is not enough space or natural resources for traditional farming to grow.
We are changing all of that. The open ocean is our last great frontier and presents enormous potential, opportunity and abundance. But we must move on with a sense of urgency to protect our oceans and to feed our hungry planet.
