Who We Are

Our Company

We are open ocean free-range fish farmers. Open Blue Sea Farms has developed the hands-on experience, knowledge and expertise to cultivate natural, healthy, delicious and premium quality, branded marine white fish through environmentally safe and sustainable, deep ocean aquaculture methods, what we call free-range fish farming. Our free-range methods are critically needed now as our oceans are becoming depleted by wild caught commercial fishing and while conventional fish farming, the world’s fastest growing food sector, cannot keep pace with rising U.S. and global demand for seafood, the primary source of protein for over one billion people.

Open Blue’s open ocean free-range aquaculture is successful because fish are cultivate in native waters far offshore in the open ocean and raised in a strong flow of pristine waters that have not been impacted or influenced by land. Further, our sustainable methods can satiate growing appetites without poisoning the environment, our oceans, sea life and us.

Open Blue’s initial species is Cobia, a premium sashimi grade, marine white fish, targeted for the gourmet seafood market, the upper 20% of the seafood industry in the U.S.

Open Blue’s overall business strategy includes a vertically integrated business model from hatchery, ocean growout, harvesting and processing operations to Company-driven brand marketing and sales. We are building a unique enterprise to create value, control quality and maintain full traceability through every step of the ‘egg to plate’ cycle.

Open Blue Sea Farms is the culmination of nearly a decade of cutting edge investigative research and study on open ocean aquaculture in collaboration with the word’s leading scientific laboratories and universities. Our founder, Brian O'Hanlon, is an open ocean aquaculture veteran, who has had multiple milestone successes in sustainably culturing and farming species of fish. Through his first venture, Snapperfarm, Inc. he was one of the first in the world to move fish farming into the open sea and so began what we now refer to as “open ocean Free-Range fish farming.” He pioneered the use of advanced submersible cage designs for deep water, high energy, open ocean sites. He was the first to stock mutton snapper and cobia in open ocean cages in the Western hemisphere and the first to successfully market and sell commercial quantities of premium cobia to the U.S. market.
